I have the same problem with rdesktop 1.7.0, Ubuntu 11.10, Windows XP SP3 On my laptop everything is fine, but on the desktop sometimes I got the message "The device is not connected" and shared folder is not accessible.
But if I use rdesktop under strace (thanks for the advice!) - this message never appears and shared folder is always accessible.
