I'm running 10.04 (presently kernel 2.6.32-38-generic but the newest one
is installing now) and the latest NVidia driver (VIDIA UNIX x86_64
Kernel Module 285.05.09 Fri Sep 23 17:31:57 PDT 2011). Through
several kernel updates and several driver updates over the last six
months at least, whenever a new kernel comes by the system wants to drop
to safe mode. I found that if I 'exit to console', then re-run the
NVidia driver installer as root, the problem is fixed until next time.

A possibly related piece of info: whenever I log in, I get a message
that says "the X server does not support the resolution requested". But
everything proceeds to work fine. I'm running dual 1680x1050 monitors.
