This is also an issue in Precise, especially when using autohide for the launcher.
I think the glow effect should be intensified and/or made larger, and it should extend past the edge of the launcher such that it is visible from the edge of the screen even when the launcher is hidden. This would also clue the user as to which part of the side of the screen to move the mouse to in order to get right at the icon needing attention.
