I have updated mc to version 4.8.1 from the upstream sources, as debian packages were outdated as well. I do not use it very much, but after building it locally, it seems to work nicely.
Because this new version is much newer than the current one, the debdiff is humongous (~ 4MB with gzip) so I won't put it here (unless it is requested).
