Blix: This sounds like a symptom of how you enabled the binary drivers. Did you use restricted-manager or did you use nvidia-glx-config (or did you do something else)? If you used nvidia-glx-config then your issue sounds like bug #48077 . restricted-manager will also fill in "AllowGLXWithComposite" and "AddARGBGLXVisuals" . It is the recommend as the way to install the NVIDIA drivers on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/BinaryDriverHowto/Nvidia ....
