I was thinking all along that something probably regressed in the
Kernel.

But I just recently saw this post -

It seems running ubuntu-bug and letting it play the test audio seems to fix the 
audio issue . And this worked for me.
So now I am doubting if this is a kernel bug or just a configuration issue 
somewhere.
