Ok, I re-installed the OS last night and was able to go into the LiveCD
by changing the display settings at boot (it appears it doesn't actually
matter which resolution I choose, as long as I choose to change
resolution at boot time).

Also, the problem appears to be the video card, as when installing the
Nvidia drivers, X refuses to start, even after running nvidia-xconfig
(it complains about failing to load module "wfb") or editing xorg.conf
manually.

So at least the system is now bootable, now its just a matter of getting
the right video drivers installed and getting wireless to work again
(killed linux-restricted-modules while uninstalling nvidia drivers).
