I'm sorry that you experienced this, I can imagine how frustrating it
is.
This is a duplicate of bug #711635 , which I believe I have a fix for
here:

branches/ubuntu/precise/mysql-5.5/precise/revision/16
That is for the mysql-5.5 branch, but the patch *should* apply to 5.1 as
well if you change the files to mysql-server-5.1.
Marking duplicate, please comment there unless you feel this is not
actually a duplicate.
