I just wanted to report back that although it happens less frequently,
Gnome Shell still crashes no matter what version I use. Since then,
I've been using the KDE Plasma Desktop and it's been stable. Not only
that, but certain applications that would cause the system not to
respond are now working again.

For example:

Running Stellarium with Gnome3 shell would cause X to freeze and a hard
reset would be necessary. With KDE, this is no longer a problem. This
is easily reproducible any number of times simply by starting stellarium
in either desktop environment on all of my machines.
