Interesting.  Using the dapper desktop CD ifup works fine with:

iface eth1 inet dhcp
        wpa-driver hostap
        wpa-ssid onenet
        wpa-scan-ssid 1
        wpa-key-mgmt NONE

NetworkManager also appears to work fine.
