Ok, what worked for me is adding "intel_iommu=off" as a boot parameter.
This was suggested in this article by Phoronix:

As far as using the upstream kernel, is there any way of integrating it into a 
live pen drive or CD? 
I don't have 12.04 installed in my computer because it has a bug in nouveau 
that corrupts the screen, so I cannot use it. Can I test the kernel in Maverick?
