That's because the problem is with a Translations file:
E:Problem with MergeList /var/lib/apt/lists/archive.ubuntu
.com_ubuntu_dists_oneiric_universe_i18n_Translation-en
Really you need to use: 'sudo rm /var/lib/apt/lists/*'
