I'll do this in about a week's time - the PC with this problem is getting 
shipped around the world at the moment.  I'll post back here ASAP.

FWIW none of the USB devices are Logitech; it's a Microsoft keyboard and 
mouse.  Also, this has been happening for a long time (2 years or more) so I 
remain sceptical that it's fixed in the latest kernel :)
