I was able to build the mainline 3.3-rc5 kernel without an issue:

ls -ltr linux-image-3.3.0-030300rc5-generic*
-rw-r--r-- 1 jsalisbury warthogs 38057490 Feb 28 21:55
linux-image-3.3.0-030300rc5-generic_3.3.0-030300rc5.201202282121_amd64.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 jsalisbury warthogs 37487506 Feb 28 22:22
linux-image-3.3.0-030300rc5-generic_3.3.0-030300rc5.201202282121_i386.deb
-rw-r--r-- 1 jsalisbury warthogs 37784396 Feb 28 22:49
linux-image-3.3.0-030300rc5-generic-pae_3.3.0-030300rc5.201202282121_i386.deb

I used the kteam-tools mainline-build-one script. Details can be found at:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Kernel/kteam-tools
