After upgrade from Lucid (completely clean, just-formatted install from
newest iso - 10.04.4) to Precise (of 20120224 - filed bug next day):

No kernel was 'running' because Lucid's kernel (2.6.32-38-generic & its
complement recovery) was the only kernel available to select to boot
from grub but all the installed packages were now Precise versions -- at
least, I assume so. Booting on that kernel just halted at a blank
screen with flashing cursor.

@Brad: Sorry but no logs of the failed install are now available, as I
installed Oneiric and upgraded to Precise from there.

I could not repro this bug on the same laptop, by following the same
steps (fresh Lucid install, upgrade to Precise).
