ran sudo apt-get upgrade again, recieved same swat dialog prompt, answered the
same, and install continued a little bit farther:
-----
Setting up python-tk (2.5.1-0ubuntu1) ...
Setting up unattended-upgrades (0.23ubuntu3) ...
Errors were encountered while processing:
 swat
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

ran again and this time told it to ignore the swat entries at which
point the install finished without error. There are 38 packages which
were not upgraded; how do I find out why?

-----
The following packages have been kept back:
  apache-dev avahi-daemon bind9-host bittorrent cdda2wav cdrecord dnsutils
  dvd+rw-tools evince f-spot foo2zjs gdebi gnome-app-install
  gnome-volume-manager gnomebaker gnupg gxine libbind9-0 libbtctl4 libisccfg1
  libmono-system1.0-cil libossp-uuid-perl libthunar-vfs-1-2 libxine1 linux-386
  linux-headers-generic linux-image-386 linux-restricted-modules-386 mkisofs
  pdftohtml python-numpy python-numpy-ext tomboy ubuntu-artwork ubuntu-desktop

I can now run Synaptic again, with my password being accepted and the square
boxes replaced with the familiar circles.

"gksudo update-manager" also works again, though there is an error in
the terminal on startup, "warning: could not initiate dbus"

Update-manager reports 107 updates available. I'm confused as to why
update-manager says this at the same time "sudo apt-get upgrade" reports
0. I'm going to restart my machine before trying this.
