I checked the live system as-is and with all available updates installed. The described issue did not occur: /usr/lib/gcc is a proper path and /usr/lib/x86_64-linux-gnu/gcc does not even exist. Seems like for a now-unknown reason my paths were skewed up. I think this bug can safely be closed.
