In precise I got error due to libslang2 being multiarched:

checking for dummy main to link with Fortran libraries... none
checking for Fortran name-mangling scheme... lower case, underscore, no extra
underscore
checking for the slang library and header files ... no
configure: error: unable to find the slang library and header file slang.h
make: *** [debian/stamp-autotools] Error 1
dpkg-buildpackage: error: debian/rules build gave error exit status 2

Attached patch solves this but then:

Testing examples/kitchensink ...
/bin/sh: line 1: 23736 Segmentation fault (core dumped) ../../safe_slsh
../../slsh -n ./test.sl > test.out 2>&1
make[3]: *** [test.out] Error 139
make[2]: *** [test_dir] Error 2
make[2]: Leaving directory `/tmp/slang-slirp-1.9.8'
