I tried 'manual selection' on my most recent attempt to tackle this,
which launched an interface for aptitude.

It looked like just a shell installation was queued for installation
there.

The evidence might suggest the Ubuntu package list isn't being loaded
into the installer, but I'm not sure how to verify that.

Bootup addendum, possibly useful? Once you choose nothing at the tasksel
dialog, bypassing the error:
- An installation with no LVM fails on bootup by displaying a flashing cursor
on tty7
- An LVM installation displays 'mountall: Disconnected from Plymouth' on tty7
