After submitting the bug, I began getting this error occasionally: "DBus error org.freedesktop.DBus.Error.NoReply: Message did not receive a reply (timeout by message bus)"
This is the error reported in bug #597933. I tried applying the fix suggested here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1040653 which consists of adding libata, ata_piix, piix, and ide-generic to /etc/modules. Initially, this seemed to make the situation better, but it did not totally fix it. However, now I am back to where I started: The drive will work fairly well for a period of time (say, half a dozen discs). Then it will stop working completely with the above symptoms. At that point, restarting may or may not fix it. One additional point: The problems seem less likely to happen if I am not connected to a network while using the drive, and more likely to happen if I am connected via the wire. I don't know what to make of this, or whether it is a coincidence. More than happy to provide additional information if that would be helpful. Just let me know what, as I know precious little about this end of things.
