Could you allow a means for the config file to specify both a color and
an image file? That way, if both are given, then the color can be set
whether or not the image is available---in other words, the color
setting serves as a fallback.

For example,

    background=#444444
    background=/path/to/greyish.png
    (i.e. last valid directive wins)

    background=#444444:/path/to/greyish.png

    background-color=#444444
    background-image=/path/to/greyish.png
