In the meanwhile I did another test and it turns out that the reason for this error seems to be that I use a different domain than the primary one of the server. Login with [email protected] works fine and the described error only happens when login with [email protected]. Of course the differentdomain.com has been configured properly at the server and login with Pidgin Windows and [email protected] works without a problem. I suspect server's certificate verification of the Pidgin Linux build is faulty for this particular use case.
