I can verify this - after fresh system reboot, starting pidgin will
start the process, but the Pidgin window will not appear until you kill
the process and start Pidgin again.

The quick workaround, instead of rebooting the PC, like OP suggested,
you can use 'killall pidgin' in terminal and then start Pidgin again.
