here's another one of those gotchas...  alsa_record_playback_automated 
works best when you use a 3.5mm patch cable connecting the headphone 
jack to the mic jac.  (assuming of course that the levels are properly set).

If this test consistently fails, try it with a patch cable and see if 
the outcome is any different.  You can also do this outside of checkbox 
by running the audio_test script as is:

$ audio_test; echo $?
