I haven't used Ubuntu 11.10. However, I also meet exactly the same issue in Ubuntu 12.04 Beta1.
Anyway, is there a live fix for the issue? I mean when the installer go wrong, can we issue some commands in root shell to fix it. We can get root shell from virtual terminals.
