I am not sure if this is related, but I am also having another issue with presumably Unity and xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, which renders my touchpad on my MacBook Pro 5,2 useless as soon as I start to utilize the keyboard after logging in. Whenever I enter text in either the Dash's search bar or press a function key, e.g. to adjust the keyboard backlight, the touchpad stops working until I log out and back in again. This is very frustrating.
I filed two bug reports regarding this here #938039 and here #948389 .
