OK I managed to find a machine with a ICH5 controller inside it ( 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801EB/ER (ICH5/ICH5R) IDE Controller (rev 02) 00:1f.2 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801EB (ICH5) SATA Controller (rev 02) ) and I see that ata_piix is disasbled in 2.6.20-16. I see the incorrect cdrom references in /etc/fstab (which I think might be worth spinning off into a bug of their own) but I *don't* any IRQ timeouts or IRQs being disabled. I'd be curious to know if the folks suffering IRQ issues can check (no need to install it yet) whether there is a later BIOS for their motherboard...
