Bad news - I (tried to) follow your hints:
a) in Xorg.conf, I removed the line with: Load "i2c"
b) I added in the section "Extension" a line with: Option "UseFBDev" "true"
c) I rebooted
Still this machine doesn't offer larger resolutions...
