You have a point, but it's not related to my primary issue.

I'm using a dual-DVI cable, however the mobo (Asus P8H61I /
http://www.asus.com/Motherboards/Intel_Socket_1155/P8H61I/ ) only
supports DVI with Max. Resolution 1920 x 1200 @60Hz. The highest
available for me was 1600x1200 and 1680x1050. If I'd been using HDMI I'd
expect at least 1920x1080.

My primary issue was that the default resolution both when installing
and when starting the installed OS for the first time was 720x400, which
is so low that it makes it really hard to change. (You don't get to see
the entire config-screen, since the config-screen is at least 600 pixels
high...)

This is a bad experience for first-time installers and is likely to put
them off without even trying Ubuntu.

I noticed the same problem when I afterwards tried to install ubuntu
11.10... (Resolution set to 720x400, and the "Apply" button in "change
display resolution" config window is outside the visible area on screen)
