Public bug reported:

The Equalizer in for example Audacious shows that somethings apparently
playing, but nothing can be heared.
The Hardware seems to be fine, as a windows xp 64 in the same machine
(dualboot) does play audio.

It once worked in this exact Xubuntu machine - months ago - than it
stopped working (not sure when it last worked) and i don't have any more
ideas - tried all the ubuntu sound troubleshooting guides.
