Public bug reported:

In dconf-editor, at the entry for org/gnome/desktop/background, the
show-desktop-icons checkbox seems to be unchecked by default, even
though icons seem to show by default on the desktop.

Toggling this checkbox to the checked state, and then back to the
unchecked state (the way I found it), makes the graphical environment
"blow up" for lack of a better term.

Once I unchecked the box (to return it to the way I found it), and then
attempted to switch workspaces via the keyboard, the virtual desktops
grid overlay seemed to spawn copies of itself. (I am using 16 workspaces
in a 4x4 grid.) At the same time, the screen just overall seemed to be
infinitely "vibrating" (in a visual sense) as long as the ctrl+alt+arrow
keys were held down.

Additionally, moving the dconf-editor window (or any other application
window) left a visual trail of the window's prior positions on the
screen. This trail did not disappear once I stopped dragging the window.

Additionally, hitting the Super_Left key opened the Dash, but the Dash
seemed to no longer respond to typing after opening.

In short the desktop became unusable when restoring this setting to the
way I found it. Only toggling the checkbox to checked (which is the way
I would have expected to find it to start with) seems to make the
problem go away.

This is just wierd to me because I've never altered this setting
previously, but the graphical shell was hitherto working just fine. I'm
not even really sure where the problem lies (Gnome, Compiz, etc). I'm
not sure if dconf-editor (in dconf-tools) is the actual problem, or just
the messenger, but it is what I was using when the behavior occurred.

I am attaching a screenshot. I am using Ubuntu 11.10 32bit with Unity
3D. I don't use Ubuntu Tweak. The only reason I even saw the checkbox is
because I was looking in dconf-editor for a gsettings string I could use
later in a post-install script for Precise Pangolin to automate changing
my desktop background color.

Any thoughts?
