This appears to be "fixed" after a reboot. I applied the latest updates (which i do several times per day) to the beta operating system. I then went to log out, and as happens from time to time at log out the computer freezes solid (not even ctrl+alt+f1 will unfreeze it), so i powered off, powered back on, and when i did this started working the right way.
