I further observed that the write speed to the external USB drive, for
Lucid, is a lot better than the read speed. I'm seeing write speeds
around 30MB/s which is ok. However, the read speed continues to be
extremely slow. Nautilus was telling me that the file transfer speed
was around 5 MB/sec when copying from the external USB drive to an
internal SATA drive. I started a capture using the command

  cat /sys/kernel/debug/usb/usbmon/1u > /tmp/1u.mon.out

before connecting the external drive and then beginning the copy of a 5
GB file from the external USB drive using Nautilus to copy the file to
an internal SATA drive. After about 100 MB, I killed the trace with the
CTRL-C key and then cancelled the copy.

The trace is about 2.6 MB of plain text. How can I get that to you?
Surely you don't want me to try to paste it here?
