Folks, A user joined us on IRC, and helped me further narrow the problem.
It turns out the Brother printers really do seem to dislike the currenthalftone operator - but instead of giving an error, which is the "correct" thing to do, it just chokes and spits the page out. So we have the core of the problem. This may not be too easy to work- around, but we've got good information now.
