After another look at the code, this does still seem to be deliberate,
if still counterintuitive. When drawing the header selection popup,
there's a comment that reads:
// if we currently only show one of either sender/receiver column
// modify the popup text in the way, that it displays the text of the other
of the two
Another strange comment later on:
// if we change the visibility of the receiver column,
// the sender column has to show either the sender or the receiver
