more info.. Substituting the ip number for the kingsolar test case has same results.
lynx (after apt-get install lynx, reboot) has the same problem, where https://kingsolar.net does not work, but the port 8443 one does work. Running the server in debug mode (at the receiving end of the problem connection), results in *no* related logging of info, whereas a normal single https connection can result in verbose logging (20 to 50 lines) of connection details (key negotiation etc). Since the root cause may be subsystems related, note also that I can successfully ssh into the client computer (after apt-get install ssh).
