[Problem]
During boot, comes up with screen corruption and immediately locks up unless
i915.i915_enable_rc6=0 is used.

Both the motherboard (DH67GD) and cpu (i5-2405S) are stock Intel just
purchased via Newegg. USB live images from prior to when rc6 was
enabled install and boot fine, but more recent images have the
corruption/lockup problem, unless I pass the i915.i915_enable_rc6=0
parameter to the kernel. I installed an old precise image and upgraded
it, then disabled rc6.

The corruption looks like a scottish tartan, with bands of lines running
horizontally and vertically. The screen is static (no pixels move).
The mouse cursor does not move, the machine becomes unpingable. System
is power cycled at this point by holding down the power button.

The failure happens 100% of the time when rc6 is enabled. If plymouth is
on it appears once plymouth kicks in; if plymouth is disabled and auto-
login enabled, it'll make it to the user session, which displays
properly for half a second, and then the corruption appears.

The motherboard is reasonably generic but the cpu is one of the low
power models. Guessing that might not play well with rc6? It also has
a "mini" power supply, but don't know if that plays any role. I have
an identical set of this hardware, which I'm going to assemble and see
if it is similarly affected.

The system is connected to its monitor via a KVM on the VGA port.
Keyboard and mouse also connect to the KVM via a USB-to-PS2 adapter. I
will experiment with different configurations of the inputs and outputs
to see if varying them has any effect.

Since the failure happens early in boot, I've been unable to ssh in and
get dmesg output. Nothing gets printed to kern.log; indeed, some of the
lockups have occurred in the middle of it writing debug output. I'm
going to try setting up a netconsole.

Prototypical corruption pattern. This is what I see on a "normal" boot
after installation.

Closeup. The vertical lines are red, the horizontal ones are random
colored pixels.

By disabling the boot graphics, plymouth and so on, and allowing auto-
login, I'm able to get into the user session. The screen actually draws
properly for a fraction of a second but then corrupts as shown in this
photo and locks up hard. Can't vt switch or ssh in at this point.

Similar to the previous photo, but with GRUB_GFXPAYLOAD_LINUX=keep
instead of text, as was set for the prior photo. This time the
corruption occurs prior to the X session starting.

Same system, different monitor.

I should mention the VGA connection I referred to earlier actually
involved a VGA->DVI adapter. The motherboard has only DVI and HDMI
outputs.

This photo shows a direct-attached DVI monitor (KVM used only for
keyboard/mouse). The corruption pattern is different in this case.

With HDMI instead, the system still locks up post-grub but I see a blue
screen (the monitor's standard 'no input' appearance) rather than
corruption.

Interesting:

I finished assembling the second identical system. All the hardware
bits are the same manufacturer and model numbers. However, I'm not
reproducing the screen corruption on this system, whether rc6 is enabled
or disabled. HDMI works on this second system, too (more or less).

I'm going to try some hardware swapping to see if it can be isolated to
a particular component.
