Here's what nm-applet says when started on a freshly booted system:

** WARNING **: Could not initialize NMClient /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager: 
Did not receive a reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did 
not send a reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply 
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.
** Message: applet now removed from the notification area

GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: gdk_pixbuf_scale_simple: assertion `dest_width > 0' 
failed
** Message: using fallback from indicator to GtkStatusIcon
** Message: applet now embedded in the notification area

** WARNING **: Failed to register as an agent: (4) Did not receive a
reply. Possible causes include: the remote application did not send a
reply, the message bus security policy blocked the reply, the reply
timeout expired, or the network connection was broken.


BTW, I should add that I am only online because I manually started dhclient. If 
this bug isn't seeing enough attention then it might also be because many 
people can't get online to report ;)
