I got it working again! Purging rhythmbox did not help; it still didn't keep 
added radio stations. I then noticed that it hadn't deleted the 
~/.local/share/rhythmbox directory, so I manually moved it. In the newly 
generated directory, it was finally able to save radio stations in the empty 
database. 
I then tried to copy my own db into the directory, and could still save new 
stations. The contents of the new and old directories are slightly different 
(the old one had an additional subdir "audioscrobbler", and an empty 
"rhythmdb.xml.tmp" file), but I don't see why this should cause any problem. 
The problem is solved, though.
