When a nvidia proprietary driver is install and the kernel is updated, the restricted modules are not updated automatically. Could you install linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic? Just seach "nvidia" in Synaptic. You should see that linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-15-generic is installed but not linux-restricted-modules-2.6.20-16-generic. Does it help?
