The root certificate in question is "VeriSign Class 3 Public Primary
Certification Authority - G5". But I have this certificate in my
standard keystore.

I have the impression that signature checking doesn't work at all. I
tried to collect other signed Java applets from the web, but I only
found two, and both of them use the same VeriSign root cert:
