For systems equipped with the Realtek ALC883 and ALC888 codec hardware, I solved this issue by obtaining, compiling, and installing the Linux driver code available at http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/. (Navigate "High Definition Audio Codecs" --> "I accept to the above" checkbox and click the button --> download "Linux Driver (3.0)"). Compile and install (run the "install" script with root privileges); "sudo rm -r /dev/snd". Reboot machine. Check system for new volume controls and make sure all are active. You should now have sound; I did!! :-)
