I got the same problem with my Canon LiDE 20. This thread http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=374179 led me to a solution that worked for me: just remove the hplip and hplip-data packages and then it works. Of course there is something broken here, but if you don't have an HP multifunction printer/scanner you might as well remove hplip.
