I have been calling it successfully like so:
# duplicity --exclude-device-files --exclude-other-filesystems --num-
retries 3 --volsize 10 --full-if-older-than 4W --exclude /proc --exclude
/dev --exclude /sys --exclude /backup --exclude /paphosting --exclude
/kvm / scp://***@***/duplicity/***/

it is of type 'GEnum'
Import of duplicity.backends.sshbackend Failed: No module named paramiko
UnsupportedBackendScheme: scheme not supported in url:
scp://***@***/duplicity/***/
duplicity --help shows that scp is still a valid backend storage type.
Version: 0.6.18-0ubuntu2 does not work (this is head as of 20120319)
Version: 0.6.17-0ubuntu1 is fine.
