Alan, make sure you upgrade properly. Right now you have packages installed with different versions. The fixes to NetworkManager to *avoid crashing* with ipw2200 have landed in Precise already; so running a full upgrade will likely fix this.
This doesn't mean that everything is fixed however; WPA-secured networks will still be unavailable for connection, because there is no way to tell whether the device supports it if the driver reports it doesn't.
