Is NM running?
Also, is nm-applet running, and is there a notification area or
indicator tray in the panel for it to be rendered? Finally, is nm-applet
enabled? Please make sure the GConf key /apps/nm-applet/show-applet is
set to "true":
gconftool-2 --get /apps/nm-applet/show-applet
