My symptoms are the same on an Acer Aspire, and only started 3 days ago. Works fine in Windows 7, and sometimes on reboot in Ubuntu 11.10. USB mouse works.
This appears to be a long standing problem with various different touchpads. Please get it resolved, as it would appear to be a basic issue.
