OK, I think I'm narrowing this down: Every time I use the Ubuntu-Tweak (Compiz) "Scale" feature (in my case by going down to the left corner), I lose wireless mouse functionality.
I'm still not sure where this bug should be filed? Unity? Ubuntu Tweak?
