Hey there, i am also affected by this bug, or better inconvenient behaviour. I tend to switch users on my 11.10 quite frequently and also use the suspend feature a lot. At least in the second case nm connections get reset during this procedure, thus piling up quite a lot of connect/disconnect notifications in the notification area. And this although I used the "don't show this again" button on almost every occasion - yes it even seems to reappear in a random manner, although i am not absolutely sure about this.
I found an elegant workaround for another application (jupiter) flooding the notification area (http://askubuntu.com/questions/74234/how-do-i-clear-all-gnome-shell-notifications). Basically, you had to add the option "--hint int:transient:1" to every call of notify-send in the file /usr/lib/jupiter/scripts/notify . But I have no clue whether a similar fix could be applied in this case, because the notifications might not be invoked by notify-send.
