Thunderbird 10.0.2
Kubuntu 11.10, KDE 4.8.1

I can confirm. It really doesn't execute scripts from
~/.thunderbird/init.d/

Under Kubuntu thunderbird starts from shell script from
/usr/lib/thunderbird-10.0.2/thunderbird.sh so probably this script should be
modified to pickup and then execute scripts from user's home directory
(~/.thunderbird/init.d/)

Late I probably will be able to upload patch....
